Harm Reduction 3.0: Liberatory Harm Reduction in Practice

Objectives:

  • Introduce The Manitoba Harm Reduction Network, a model of a harm reduction organization

  • Increase our knowledge of the role of anti-racism and anti-oppression in harm reduction 

  • Increase our knowledge of how social structures, systems, policies and practices make substance use harmful including prohibition and colonization

  • Increase our knowledge of how social structures impact our substance use decisions

  • Challenge our understanding of substance use and “addiction” 

  • Increase our  knowledge  of Harm Reduction: definition, examples, principles 

  • Challenge the concept of ‘non-judgmental care’ & how values and beliefs contextualize our work 

  • Increase our knowledge of risk-taking & why we engage in behaviours that we know could harm us

Introduction to Harm Reduction

Rather than focus on individual behaviour, our approach to harm reduction focuses on how systems create and exacerbate harms to people who use drugs and other oppressed groups, often by design and with intent. This session will be an introduction to Harm Reduction; definition, principals and examples.

Harm Reduction: Examining How Systems Create Harms

  • Length: ½ day

  • Suitable for:

    • People who are familiar with the principles of harm reduction

    • People who have completed Introduction to Harm Reduction

This workshop is designed for people who are familiar with the principles of Harm Reduction and would like to explore the impacts that systems have on the harms related to substance use. In this session, we will look at how racism and colonialism are built into our institutions, our own roles in these systems, and how best to serve people today while working for systemic change. We know that it is not enough to be non-racist, but that we must be actively anti-racist every day.

Challenging Our Understanding of Substance Use

  • Length: 1 day

This session is oriented towards anyone looking to better understand the evidence behind substance use, addiction and harm reduction.

This workshop will support participants in challenging unexamined beliefs and unconscious biases related to substance use. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of the nature of substance use, the science behind substance use disorders and alternative approaches to managing and healing from “addictions.” This will include specific training on models of harm reduction, community and peer support based-approaches to care, and identifying and eliminating stigma.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Increase individual capacity in identifying and challenging biases and stigmatising frameworks of care

  • Increase knowledge community and peer support based-approaches to care


Drug Poisoning Prevention and Response

Length: ½ day

  • Suitable for:

    • People who are familiar with the principles of harm reduction

    • This session is oriented towards service providers seeking support in bolstering the harm reduction programming and policies within their organization.

This workshop will support service providers in developing skills, policies and practices to help align their work and organization with best practices in harm reduction. 

This will include specific training on naloxone administration, developing harm reduction policies, eg. safer bathroom policy, and direct support with the legal/logistical concerns related to adapting harm reduction practices to organizations on the front line . Topics covered otherwise include: peer-leadership, supply distribution, and the process of becoming an official Take-Home Naloxone Site.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Increase organizational capacity in practising harm reduction strategies

  • Increase organizational capacity in developing policies and procedures that are in line with best practices in harm reduction

  • Develop skills in overdose prevention and response (naloxone administration)
